Solar Energy – The Truth…

Posted on: October 27th, 2010 by BT No Comments

By John Hoffman:

A recent Wall Street Journal editorial that boldly stated that Photovoltaic solar energy is a “speculative and immature technology that costs far more than ordinary power” was brought to my attention.  I work in the solar industry and am constantly forced to dispel misconceptions so this is nothing new – But from the Wall Street Journal, I say Nay Nay.

First off the solar industry is far from ‘speculative’ or ‘immature’.  There are over a million people that work in solar related businesses and far more that consume power from the sun’s rays.   The people that install solar on their homes and businesses do so because it works and there are real economic and social benefits.   As for ‘immature’ the technology behind solar, Photovoltaic’s (creation of a voltage in a material when exposed to light), was first observed in 1839 by Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel.  And below is a timeline of everything that’s happened in the industry since:

  • 1904 – Albert Einstein wrote paper giving explanation of theory which won the Nobel Prize.
  • 1954 – Ma Bell produces first solar cells.
  • 1977 – Solar panels installed on White House
  • 1984 – Solar panels removed from White House
  • 2010 – Solar panels installed on White House (rinse and repeat)

Well maybe not everything but my personal faves.  Point being the technology is anything but ‘immature’.

Now to price.  We all can agree that there is a distinct difference between price and cost.  The reality is when you compare the real costs of solar with the fully loaded real costs of burning fossil fuels including coal, oil and natural gas, solar is cheaper.  This is true when it comes to nuclear power (the wolf in wolf’s clothing) as well.  So it’s tragically ironic that the owner of the esteemed Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones, recently announced plans to build one of the largest solar facilities in the country.

The Truth:  solar panels are long lasting (40-50 years), will pay for themselves in first 5-10, when being used solar panels are motionless and odorless,  pollution free and silent with the lone byproduct of shade.  What more can you ask for…Beauty?  Style?  Here are a few of my favorite residential examples:
