Commercial Solar Installation

Posted on: June 14th, 2011 by SN No Comments

There are many benefits for commercial solar installation for your businesses.

Do to the  continue increase of energy cost, by having solar systems you won’t have the inability to forecast long term energy cost, so that you can protect your business from future rate increase. Having solar systems and also being green has also had a very positive, social, and public image. At the same time on the economic side of it, it has become a lot more affordable. Today there are financing options available, sometimes it requires very minimal or even no upfront cost to start, so your business can start enjoying the solar system and all benefits immediately.

Professional Solar Installation

When people come to SunGreen, sometimes ask whether you have a roof leak problem, we don’t. When people working with SunGreen Systems they don’t have roof leaking issues, the reason is two-fold.

Number one, we work closely with every roofer on each project, and when we have the installation, before installation we have the roofer to inspect the roofs, make sure it is okay and then when we have all the standoffs we will make sure the roofer will seal off all the standoffs on the roof. And they get paid after that and they’re happy. The owners are also happy because they have their warranty in place in full force.

Second, SunGreen Systems has a good construction management system and good founders of the company are all from real estate development and construction background. We take great pride in our construction quality, construction management. In fact, for commercial and residential projects, so far we will make sure we have the project bring in within budget according to your schedule and present a good quality construction and that is what we are so proud of.

Solar Electricity Credits

Posted on: June 14th, 2011 by SN No Comments

We frequently get asked about, do we have batteries with are solar systems, or what happened to the electricity that if my systems produces more electricity than I can use.

The answer is that any excess electricity for example, in a home when everybody is out at work or school, and there is no body in the house during the day, your solar system is working very hard producing lots of power on sunny days; that power flow’s directly back to the grid and your electric meter actually spins backwards. When you get home after work, turn on your air conditioner or television set; then you start using those credits that you have been accruing all day long.

Similarly with the business which is maybe closed on Saturday and Sunday that all the power that the system on the top of the office building or the warehouse is producing, is flowing directly back to the grid. On Monday morning, when you show up for work you start drawing down some of those credits that you have. Now, generally you will not get a check in California from the utility. It’s a use it or lose it, but typically people don’t have enough roof space that they’re going to generate that much excess electricity that they’re not going to use themselves. If you have credits, the credits do roll over to the subsequent month. So in fact, you have roll over credits. However, on December 31, at the end of the year if you have any credits, they evaporate, they will not send you a check, so it’s a use it or lose it situation.

Now, that could change if we get a feed-in-tariff, F.I.T., which is what they have in Germany and Spain and other countries where the electric utility actually sends checks to their customer for excess production at quite a high rate. Governor Schwarzenegger before he left office signed a proclamation that California would get a feed-in -tariff. The P.U.C., Public Utilities Commission and the utilities are in some pretty steamy negotiations as to what that rate would be and thus far we do not have a feed-in-tariff. My opinion is that we eventually will have one. Most of the advance countries in the world do have them, and at that point consumers or businesses that do have credits excess would get a check for their excess production.

Edison building experimental green home

By JEFF COLLINS THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER
The Orange County Register

Southern California Edison is planning to build an environmentally friendly home near the Orange County Great Park that not only will be green, but also won’t take a lot of greenbacks to build.

The experimental house, dubbed the ABC Green Home, will demonstrate that a solar-powered, environmental home can be built using available materials, technology and appliances at a cost that’s competitive with conventional housing, project organizers said.

The project is part of an effort to meet a 2020 goal to build “net-zero” homes — homes that produce as much energy as they use.

The house will be the first of two experimental homes that Edison will build in Orange County, with support from the homes’ designer, KTGY Group architects, and Newport Beach-based Green Home Builder magazine.

High school students enrolled in local construction programs will pre-build walls and other components at their schools, and a contractor will assemble the final product at an Edison site that’s still being determined. The goal is to have the home on display for a year so the public and the homebuilding industry can learn from this effort.

After that, the home will be moved to a new site and given away, most likely to a low-income family or a veteran, clearing the way for a second project to build a two-story home that’s green.

The project was dubbed the ABC Green Home because of its goal to have it affordable, buildable and certified by several of the green-building rating agencies. The project is being unveiled this week at the building industry’s Pacific Coast Builders Conference in San Francisco.

“There’s a misconception in the housing business that green homebuilding is daunting,” said Nick Slevin, publisher of Green Home Builder magazine and a project organizer. “We want to build this out of materials you can get anywhere, like Ganahl Lumber. We’re not building it out of unobtainium.”

Organizers said the home will be futuristic but will have a traditional Craftsman design.

It will be a one-story home with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a den, with a total of 1,700 square feet and an attached garage. The kitchen opens up to a dining-living room area. It will have a large pantry to store bulk items from Wal-Mart or Costco.

But it won’t have a fireplace or chimney.

It will not only be environmental, but also a universal design — meaning that it will be handicapped accessible to some degree, with features like wider doors and halls, lower work spaces and can be adapted for wheelchairs in showers and under sinks.

The home will be all electric — not because it’s being built by an electric utility, said Edison’s John Morton, project construction manager. But because the “smart” appliances that can exchange data with “smart” energy meters happen to be electric.

Organizers said the home will have 100 nuances and innovations, things such as:

The garage’s rear door opens onto a covered rear patio rather than directly into the house to keep auto exhaust from getting indoors.

Solar panels will be placed on the rear roof to improve the home’s appearance.

Studs — the upright pieces of lumber in walls — will be built two-feet apart instead of the traditional 16 inches and will be made from 2-by-6-inch pieces instead of the traditional 2-by-4′s. This reduces lumber use and creates bigger spaces in walls for insulation.

Carpets will be made from recycled materials.

Landscaping will reduce water consumption, using paving stones that recycle water for irrigation.

Non-toxic, zero emissions paint and wallpaper will be used to improve the indoor air quality.

The furnace closet for heating and air conditioning units will be centrally located, so that ducts can be placed in lower ceilings in closets rather than in the attic.

Edison eventually hopes to have plug-in stations for hybrid and electric cars, but it’s uncertain if that will be in the first home or the second home.

Edison’s goal is to build the home for under $300,000.

After the home is given away, Edison will continue to monitor the new owner’s energy use to see if it met its goal of building a net-zero home.

More about the home is available at www.abcgreenhome.com.

Fearless Predictions for 2011

Executive Minute #9

Fearless Predictions for 2011

We don’t just look to the sun for ideas – we also scan the horizon to see what’s coming. So what lies in store for the new year?

  • California’s economy will grow faster than the national average. Don’t just take our word for it – economists at two universities agree that consumer spending will go up, unemployment will decline, and the hottest sector will be technology.
  • Traffic will increase. A growing California economy means population increases and more people commuting to work. Think stop-and-go traffic – ideal for hybrid vehicles.
  • Oil prices will rise. When economies improve, factories ramp up production, trucks jam the roads, and people travel more. The result: oil demand increases, which translates into higher prices at the pump and on power bills. So regardless of what happens with government green rebates (still TBD), those oil prices will make alternative energy look even more financially attractive.

All three trends could make 2011 a great year to invest in renewable energy – particularly with new solar technologies in the works. Of course, we’ll keep you posted on all those developments.

Until next time, stay sunny!

Solar Electricity vs. Solar Heating

Posted on: June 9th, 2011 by SN No Comments

We often get ask when people here that we’re a solar business, “Oh are you heating water like, to wash my dishes and my clothes, or what are you doing?’’.

Many people, who are not too familiar with PV solar industry, first think in terms of water because for about 30 years, 40 years we’ve had solar thermal heating systems for swimming pools and household uses. SunGreen Systems is a PV Photovoltaic solar producer, we produce electricity. And I’ll tell you why we focus on electricity. In general, in Southern California water is heated with natural gas, we have hot water heaters, even swimming pools; they tend to be heated with natural gas. Natural gas prices are relatively inexpensive, in California. So when somebody looks at an energy bill in the winter time say, you may have a high gas bill but most of that is probably going to heat your home or heat your business, very little of it is for the water. Hot water heaters are very, very efficient, they’ll keep the water hot for days their beautifully insulated now, and it just does not take that much energy to heat water.

Here at SunGreen Systems we want to make the biggest impact we can on our customers energy costs. That clearly is for electricity, there is no other way around it you have to buy it from your utility, we have so many television sets and businesses, we have equipment inside businesses and have of course air conditioning. Particularly as we get away from the coast, air conditioning for many businesses and homes is the largest consumer of electricity. So, with limited roof space or space for solar, we always recommend electricity lets go after where we can make the biggest impact which is to drive down electric cost. So that’s why we have chosen to focus on photovoltaic to produce electricity for our customers.
